Draft — the depth of your keel below the waterline — is one of the most important factors when buying a sailboat home in Punta Gorda Isles or Burnt Store Isles. Getting this wrong can mean your boat won’t fit your dock, or worse, you buy a home on a canal your vessel cannot safely navigate.

What Is the Ideal Sailboat Draft for BSI and PGI Canals?

The ideal draft for comfortable living and sailing in BSI and PGI canals is 4–5 feet. This gives ample margin above the canal bottom at mean low water in most locations while providing good performance under sail. Many production cruisers in the 35–45 foot range have drafts in this range and are well-suited to canal living in Punta Gorda.

Can I Keep a 6-Foot Draft Boat in PGI or BSI?

A 6-foot draft is manageable in many PGI and BSI sailboat-access canals but requires careful property selection and awareness of tidal cycles. At MLW in a canal with 7–8 feet of depth, a 6-foot draft boat has 1–2 feet of clearance — workable but requiring attention. Some canal locations in both communities have sufficient depth for 6-foot draft; others do not. Individual property depth soundings are essential for any boat with a 6-foot draft.

What About Boats with 7+ Foot Draft?

Drafts of 7 feet or more significantly limit your options in BSI and PGI canals. While the main Charlotte Harbor channels can accommodate these depths, many individual canal locations cannot provide reliable 7-foot depth at mean low water. Owners of deeper-draft boats often choose their tides — motoring out at high tide and returning accordingly. This is workable but limits spontaneity. If your current boat has 7+ foot draft, seriously consider whether it is the right vessel for full-time canal living in Punta Gorda.

Are Catamarans Good for BSI and PGI Canal Living?

Catamarans are excellent for Punta Gorda canal living. Twin shallow drafts of 3–4 feet on most cruising cats give maximum clearance in BSI and PGI canals. The wide beam does require attention to canal width and turning basin dimensions — not every canal accommodates a 25-foot beam catamaran comfortably for maneuvering. Starting with the boat and working backward to the property requirements is more efficient than buying a home and discovering your boat doesn’t fit.
